The past few months have been extremely challenging for us all. As we approach the end of the year, the symposium provides an opportunity to meet online, convalesce, reflect on our expereinces, and take stock on our learnings and plan for the future of our specialty.
The FPM team have produced a fantastic programme, filled with relevant and engaging topics and world class speakers. Though we are not able to run the event face-to-face, we hope that we have retained many of the engaging features of our traditional symposia, with a few new ideas and innovations added into the mix!
Our title “Into the roaring 20s” may be puzzling however the last 6 months have certainly been roaring. We have needed to adapt and make full use of our new technology to be able to reach out to our members and beyond to the world outside FPM. We have entered a new world, a new way of doing things, and are now looking to a future of previously unexpected opportunities to build our community of medicines developers.
We look forward to welcoming FPM members and non-members alike to our virtual home on the 26 and 27 November.
The 2020s have started as no-one could have predicted, with a worldwide pandemic that has tested the medical profession like never before. Pharmaceutical medicine has been on the front line in this fight, and the skills, ingenuity and knowledge of FPM members and our medical and scientific colleagues in all healthcare professions have been tested to the highest degree.
The main themes of the FPM 2020 Annual Symposium – rare diseases, health technologies and access to medicines – were agreed six months ago when we first started planning this symposium, but are even more relevant to our future now than they were then. COVID-19 brought these topics into sharp focus and highlighted how our specialty is integral in keeping the public safe.
We are excited to have developed an innovative and interactive programme with high-profile speakers from across industry, regulatory bodies, academia, patient groups and the wider heath sector. I look forward to seeing you in November.
Programme and registration
The 'Stonier Lecture'
PMST Trainees and new entrants to pharmaceutical medicine are integral in shaping and driving the future of our specialty. Therefore, as part of the symposium schedule we would like to give someone in the early stages of their career in pharmaceutical medicine the opportunity to give a presentation, as part of a plenary session, on their vision of what the next 10 years will hold for the specialty of pharmaceutical medicine and the wider industry.
We have named the presentation the ‘Stonier Lecture’ in recognition of Prof Peter Stonier’s longstanding and ongoing commitment to the specialty training programme and support for trainees and new entrants. The person who delivers the selected presentation will be given a complimentary delegate pass and a £500 cash prize. To enter, trainees and new starters are asked to the submit a short abstract outlining the focus of their proposed talk.
Presentation and abstract guidance
The presentation will have a 30-minute slot, with 20 minutes allocated to the presentation itself and 10 minutes for questions and the awarding of the prize. The presentation can cover either how your own specific area of work will develop over the next 10 years, or have a broader focus. Within the three main themes listed in the event description, the lecture can focus on any aspect of the specialty, from clinical trials to medical affairs, ethics to patient engagement, regulatory issues to education and training.
Those eligible are invited to submit a short abstract outlining the content of their proposed presentation, and why they think this is an important area. Abstracts will be judged on relevance to the theme and audience, innovation, and content. The abstracts will be anonymised and reviewed by a panel including Prof Stonier and members of the symposium organising group, with one being selected to give the presentation.
Eligibility
- PMST currently in training
- Affiliates and Members who have started their first role in pharmaceutical medicine less than three years before the deadline for abstract submission and are currently revalidating

- Please submit your abstract of up to 250 words by Tuesday 8 September 2020 to b.cottam@fpm.org.uk. Abstracts over 250 words will be discounted
- Please include your name and job title and place of work, but do not submit your CV or any other supporting material
