FPM Denounces UK Riots and Racist Violence

Posted on: Tuesday 6 August 2024

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine (FPM) strongly condemns the riots and racially motivated attacks in the UK. We stand firmly against all forms of violence and discrimination, particularly those rooted in racism, which have no place in our society.

We extend our full support and gratitude to the emergency services, who tirelessly and bravely work under challenging and often dangerous conditions to protect and assist the public.

If you have been a victim of abuse, racism, or violence, we encourage you to report these incidents to the appropriate authorities. Please know that we stand in solidarity with you and support your right to safety and dignity.

Comment from Dr Marcia Philbin, Chief Executive, FPM

The racist riots in the UK have shocked us all and made many of us feel like we do not belong. The malevolence directed towards black and brown people, as well as the indiscriminate criminality carried out by rioters, stands against the values that FPM upholds. The old adage “United we stand, divided we fall” is something we should all reflect on. FPM staff, volunteers and members will stand firmly united against racial discrimination, abuse and violence.

Please stay safe.

Comment from Dr Chris Worth FFPM, Registrar, FPM

The FPM absolutely stands against any form of racism and discrimination and is appalled that any of our members and staff may be feeling threatened, scared or unwelcome at their place of work following recent events.

We urge all colleagues and staff to immediately report any incidents of racism, abuse or violence to the appropriate authorities.

Comment from Dr John Ndikum, Chair, FPM Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Forum

I am heartened by the solidarity demonstrated in various parts of the country, as well as by the counter protests to the violent acts of racism that threaten to undermine the work of our predecessors over generations, whose tireless efforts laid the foundation for a Britain of which we should all be proud. Whilst condemning the pernicious actions of the misguided few, I hope that they too shall one day see that so much more unites us than separates us, and with this understanding, join us in building an ever more harmonious and united Great Britain.
